Spelling Bee

On Friday 31 August, five of our Grade 6 learners represented CityKidz at the Wits Jozi Book Fair Spell master competition. Katlego Buthelezi, Zibusiso Moyo, Bonga Sukumani, Siphamandla Ndlovu and Siphe Nokwe did a great job. They learnt hard, put in extra effort and worked well together as a team. There were a hundred learners from twenty different schools to start with. Zibusiso and Bonga proceeded to the final of twelve eager young spellers. They gave it their best on the day, with Zibusiso claiming fourth place and Bonga claiming fifth. Well done and a great learning experience enjoyed by all.

On Saturday 1 September, Siphamandla Ndlovu travelled to Springs to compete in the Gauteng Provincial Spelling Bee competition. He represented CityKidz as the number one speller in the Johannesburg South district. It was a grand and gruelling day-long event. The competition was extremely tough, with two children representing each of Gauteng’s fifteen educational districts. The competition had 30 contestants who had already spelled their way through various levels to reach the provincial final. They were referred to as the top thirty spellers in the Gauteng Province (from Grade 4 – 6). They had emerged from a pool of approximately 2000 learners who entered the competition at the first level.

It was an honour for us to have Siphamandla on this stage – one of the top thirty in the province. Full credit is due to him for the way in which he tackled the challenge of learning over two thousand words. He studied for months with dedication and commitment, self-discipline and enthusiasm and was able to perform at a high level on a public and competitive platform.

Siphamandla, well done and thank you!! We are so proud of you. Thank You Miss  Corrigan!!
