 Chisom Amakor

The Theo Jackson Scholarship Fund was awarded to a CityKidz learner! He did it! Our Head Boy, Chisom Amakor, a Grade 7 learner, has been awarded the opportunity to attend Jeppe Boys High School in 2025.

Chisom was selected from a group of learners who came from various schools across Johannesburg. This prestigious award required Chisom to participate in Saturday classes at Jeppe Boys High School for several weeks. Chisom says he found the Maths Club challenging at first but he studied hard and soon found he was excelling. He also spent a weekend in the school boarding hostel where he experienced hostel life which included sports activities and team building exercises.

When the announcement was made about Chisom’s success, our CityKidz learners applauded long and loud. Their shared joy and pride were both infectious and inspirational. Chisom’s accomplishments serve as a role model for others and more than one learner said they wanted to be next. Chisom and his father gave thanks to the CityKidz team who supported them throughout the application process. It is an honour and a privilege to be present at the start of a young person’s future. We wish Chisom Amakor the very best for his bright future. We are so very, very proud of you Chisom! You will carry our name with pride and remember our motto: Strive to Achieve!

This is what Chisom had to say:

I remember the first day when I was called to the office of our principal, Mrs Reynolds, and the HOD to tell me about being a candidate for the Theo Jackson scholarship fund. At that point I was very excited for the future that was ahead of me. Jeppe High School for Boys has been my dream school, and for me to being given the opportunity to be a candidate of the scholarship was such an honour. When the Principal of Jeppe Boys, Mr Dale Jackson came to visit CityKidz; I was at first nervous to meet him, but he was so friendly to me. I was asked to write a motivational letter as part of the first phase and was invited to attend the Open Day. My dad and Mr. Mgobhozi accompanied me to the Open Day, which was such a thrilling experience. Jeppe Boys is such a lovely and massive school.

After a few weeks I was told that I have made it to the second round, which is the final phase. This required me to stay over at Jeppe (at Droste Boarding House). I then went through a lot of tests and interviews. I also met a lot of fun and amazing boys. After that, I became so anxious because I was told I would receive the final results in Term 3. On the day I got the great news I felt so overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I’d be going to my dream school. I would like to thank Principal Reynolds and the school for their support, as well as Jeppe High School for Boys for affording me this wonderful opportunity.
