Grade 4 Trip– Maropeng to Sterkfontein Caves

Maropeng

On Friday the 04th of May the Grade 4 learners experienced a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

The day started off as any other day except our Grade 4’s arrived at school with no bags or books only with the knowledge that they were going to learn something different. Prior to departure our classes were filled with excited learners eager to be “edutained” on a day’s visit to the Cradle of Humankind. Did you know that the Cradle of Humankind, is one of South Africa’s eight World Heritage Sites and widely recognised as the place where all humankind originated?

CityKidz to Maropeng is quite a distance away, but with all the singing and laughing on the bus time flew by so quickly.

Once we reached Maropeng the tour guides had put together curriculum-based information that made it easier for  our learners to understand  what they saw and experienced at Maropeng. The educational facts about fossils, Homo Naledi, Mrs Ples and Little foot were familiar names to the Grade 4's. The elements of Earth were explained and shown to learners in a unique and thrilling way. The Maropeng underground boat ride took them on a journey through the different elements of the universe, namely earth, fire, water and wind.

Many entertaining videos and interactive games kept the learners captivated.

After lunch we drove from Maropeng to Sterkfontein caves where we donned hard hats for the guided tour which started above ground. We were taken deep into Sterkfontein Caves. Initially there were many tears, trembling lips and ashen faces from fear but all the Grade 4 learners managed to come out on the other side with smiles on their faces.

I think these learners can be called CityKidz warriors.

To sum up; in a day we travelled for over 3 hours via bus; went on a boat ride; explored a cave and learned a great deal of new information. We had an exceptional, meaningful and memorable day with our extraordinary Grade 4 learners!
