CityKidz staff have been involved in numerous professional development activities this term already. On Friday 21st July we enjoyed a workshop given by Paolo Magliano, who is a remedial specialist and expert with regard to the acquisition of reading. She showed us innovative and exciting ways to introduce sound and letter and shared her methods and techniques in the teaching of reading. Teachers left feeling motivated and ready to apply what had been learnt.
On Saturday 29th July, we attended an informative input by a district official from the Gauteng Department of Education – Mrs Pulane Faku. The workshop focussed on the matter of “Assessment”. We were given guidelines on the principles, strategies and methods of assessment. We also discussed methods of providing intervention and support to address the needs of learners who require extra attention.
Further, the Foundation Phase staff enjoys a weekly workshop on a Tuesday designed to enhance the teaching and learning of English and Mathematics. Speech Therapist, Ms Gina Fainman addressed the Foundation Phase this Tuesday and gave invaluable input with regard to the role of a speech therapist and how to identify children with speech difficulties and the role of the teacher in helping these children.
