CityKidz was visited by a group of Grade 11 and 12 King David learners as part of their Geography programme. This proved to be an amazing opportunity for growth, connection and shared learning.
King David and CityKidz learners were welcomed by the head girl, who sparked off the Q+A session in the hall. Learners exchanged ideas, shared their experiences and asked questions. CityKidz learners spoke of their experiences of living in the inner city and concerns for high school. King David learners shared their views on their Geography project, what grade 11 is like, study routines and pressure as well as tips for negotiating entry into high school.
A tour of the school followed with the group reassembling in the staffroom where the real magic happened. Fortified by a snack pack, the King David and CityKidz learners got down to the real business of connecting. At first, through tentative questions but within minutes, the laughter erupted, groups gathered and everyone was chatting away. By the end of the session, learners had broken through social barriers and shyness. Anyone watching saw and felt that today would leave a lasting impact on these young people.
Many thanks to the organisers for the treats and especially to George Morphis and Sharon Reynolds for making the visit possible. The visit felt not only like a mini cultural exchange but also like the inaugural event of a memorable tradition. Judging by the smiles and animated chatter, these learners were embracing inclusivity and broadening perspectives, without being taught it. Such exchanges help to shape confident, respectful and motivated learners. The head boy’s farewell greeting touched us all. We trust that the positive impact of today will remain long after these young learners have finished school. Many thanks to the teams who worked behind the scenes, especially George and Sharon.
